Catagories

The different catagories of fire detection are as follows
  • P - Primary purpose is to protect property
  • P1 - AFD throughout all area
  • P2 - AFD in defined areas only
  • L - Primay purpose is to protect Human Life
  • L1 - AFD throughout all areas
  • L2 - AFD installed to L3 plus defined areas
  • L3 - AFD in escape routes and rooms opening onto escape routes
  • L4 - AFD in escape routes that compromise circulation areas like stairways and corridors
  • L5 - A non-prescriptive system in which the covered area or areas is designed to satisfy a specific fire risk.
  • M - a system designed with no AFD only manually opperated devices

Manual Call Points

  • A Person should not have to travel more than 45M through a escape route to reach a MCP
  • Should be mounted 1.4M (+/- 200mm) from the floor

Sounders

  • The minimum sound level of a sounder should be 65dB (this can be reduced to 60dB in enclosed spaces liek stairwells) or at least 5dB above the background noise.
  • VADS and Remote Indicators should be installed at least 2.1M from the floor level.


Detector Spacing

  • Smoke detectors have a coverage range of 7.5M
  • Smokes - 10.6M between heads in a grid formation
  • Smokes - 5.3M between walls in a grid formation
  • Smokes - 15M between heads in a 2M wide corridor
  • Heat detectors have a coverage range of 5.3M
  • Heats - 7.5M between heads in a grid formation
  • Heats - 3.8M between walls in a grid formation
  • Heats - 10.6M between heads in a 2M wide corridor

Obstructions

  • No device should be no closer than 500mm to any obstruction
  • No device should be mounted closer than 1M to an air inlet/outlet
  • Solid partitions <300mm from the ceiling should be treated as a wall
  • Beams over 10% of the ceiling height should also be treated as a wall
  • Devices should never be closer than double the depth of a light fitting

Building Features

  • Voids over 800mm should have AFD
  • verticle shafts (Lifts) should have a device within 1.5M of any opening
  • Enclosed Stairways should have a device on each main landing
  • Apexs can be treated as a flat roof if <600mm for a smoke
  • Apexs can be treated as a flat roof if <150mm for a heat
